Placing 2nd in the 2019 American Art Awards, Digital Representational category, is "Dawn In The Southwest" - foundation photo from Jeanette Deever Worthington.
I'm frequently asked what my criteria are for selecting which of my artworks will be entered into competition. So, I evaluate an existing work or one I'm about to create against factors that include:
1) Competition theme - does the theme allow for me to create and / or exhibit a visual that "comforts and encourages"?
2) Juror expectations - are my entries a good fit for what they're looking for? If growth from me is needed, will that growth be in the direction my DNA will allow?
3) Growth opportunities - what will I learn? Who will expand my network? How will my purpose be enriched and advanced?
Before "Dawn In The Southwest" began to emerge, I experimented with 36 versions of it to develop its color, style, and special effects.
During that experimentation phase, I set aside one version that would have resulted in a significantly different outcome.
That other darker, more dramatic option would have been beautiful - in its own, different way. It would have commanded attention - demanded respect. In the end, however, it wouldn't have passed my "comfort and encourage" test. So, it will stay in my files awhile longer.
This image, "Dawn In The Southwest" was a collaboration between my sister and me - so, it will always retain special affection . . . and, its final construction resulted in a warm, welcoming presence in a room where people may wander and want to remain.
In the end, the real reason I entered it into the competition was that - I loved it . . . and didn't care if it won or not.
Only 20 prints were made from this image. To bid, please contact us at riverdeedesigns@riverdeedesigns.com
