The “Legend of the Walnut Creek Bride” begins on a summer evening.  The long drought had reduced the crop-less land and roads to dust.

The bride’s father had set out with her toward the church in the family’s horse-drawn wagon.

When they started across the Walnut Creek bridge, a snake struck at the leg of their frightened horse.  Rearing up, the wagon tipped over – and the bride fell over the bridge railings – and down into the creek.

Her ghost can now be seen calling from the creek bed most evenings in the dry part of summer.
