Art Softens Memories Of Old

“One Flower Floats . . . “ in the little pool beneath the trellis.  It dropped from her fingers as they walked down the dirt path to climb up the stone stairs – to look through the Bastion’s arches.  The Danube might have changed in the years that had passed; but, they chose not to believe it.

He reached for her hand; and, she absently raised it toward him.  Her fingers fluttered as if to remember the delicate bloom they once held.

She remembered the violins and the satin table cloths - the first time she left Budapest.  She remembered the shops, busy with Western tourists who wanted to buy color-filled woven goods – they hoped would tie them to the East.  She remembered looking down from the turret watchtowers at the flowing blue of the river - that compelled some to waltz.

This time she left - she remembered the flower.
